From camp counselor to New Richmond city clerk

No matter if you were a camper or staff, going to camp provided a remote oasis to eschew the responsibilities of city life for literally greener pastures—open water, hiking trails, and ropes courses. But camp was also a pressure cooker of pubescent proportions: When you jam dozens of young people into an enclosed space for months at a time, any semblance of responsibility is replaced by unbridled lust, provoking teens into doing whatever they could to impress their peers and love interests. That’s why it was never a surprise when campers and staff alike would abruptly disappear over the course of the summer, unceremoniously kicked out or fired for one transgression or another, from blowjobs in sheds to getting caught joint in hand. One notoriously rule-breaking summer, my camp directors inserted a “List of Fallen Comrades” in our year-end slideshow, a reminder of the many staff who were axed. But while their time at camp was cut short, their presence lingered in the form of rumors and whispers. The exile to the city ensured there was no chance for the besmirched to defend themselves. With camp in full swing once again, I spoke to banished campers and counselors about what happened to them during and after their firings, and allow them to tell their sides of the story. VICE: How and why did you get kicked out of camp?

This summer, in the MeToo era, the way counselors encourage summer flings at co-ed camps across the country is expected to change. The Foundation for Jewish Camp is conducting a nationwide training program to prevent sexual harassment at Jewish overnight camps, which about 70, children attend each summer.

Some former campers recall a culture that encouraged sexual encounters, albeit with intercourse forbidden. She wrote that her friends who attended other Jewish camps across the country felt the same. Lewin has lofty aims for this initiative — not just to fix camp, but to fix society. At Capital Camps today, as at many co-ed camps, sexuality and relationships are the topic of constant giggly conversations among the campers by flashlight.

Liam, a year-old from Gaithersburg, Md. Parents granted permission for the children in this story to be quoted using first names only. The change in culture at camps such as Capital Camps is a result of broader national trends, as well as concerted efforts on the part of camp staffers. Outside of just Jewish youths, teenagers across the country are having less sex than previous generations: And in the broader Jewish community, the focus on marrying within the faith has died down considerably, as intermarriage becomes more common.

Summer Romance at Summer Camp

At the close of every season at a ceremony inside a large celebratory white tent, each counselor makes his or her way to the microphone to address an enthusiastic, if somewhat sad, throng of boys and girls holding tight to the waning hours of their summer at camp. What many of these staff members have only recently recognized, perhaps while voting on the award they are about to present or hastily jotting down some things to say about its recipient, are the special relationships they have forged with the youth they served.

Indeed, research from SADD Students Against Destructive Decisions points out that young people themselves rank counselors as some of the most influential people in their lives — though the many letters from my campers that I have, over time, stuffed in an already overflowing file drawer tell a much more compelling story than do data points and pie charts.

While accepting this job as a camp counselor may have conjured up all types of images, from sailing and swimming by day to roasting marshmallows around a campfire at night or, for some of you, perhaps scarier scenes involving short-sheeted beds or food fights in the mess hall , rarely do they include the ones that will ultimately prevail months from now when you think back on the time spent living with, teaching, and inspiring your campers.

Those images will careen around your brain like flashes in a kaleidoscope, leaving behind indelible marks of caring camaraderie and life lessons learned in the most casual of ways — a pickup game, a walk on the beach, or a bedtime talk.
